1. What inspired you to become a teacher?
Originally, in undergrad, I was a Nursing major. I wasn’t happy with the coursework, and I felt bored. During the summer of my freshman year, I worked at the Boys and Girls Club. I couldn’t stop thinking about my experience during that time. In my heart, that experience sparked a passion for enriching the youth. The following Fall semester, I changed my major to Middle Grades Education, and I’ve been passionate about academic enrichment and mentoring ever since.
2. What do you love most about teaching at Jonesboro Middle School?
JMS has always had my heart, and I have not only watched the student population evolve, but I have also enjoyed seeing how the administrative team has evolved and how perseverant our staff is. Jonesboro is special because our unique population of students proves to be motivated, overcomers, and college—and career-ready.
3. How do you support student success in your classroom?
When my students enter my room, they enter a judgment-free, positive, and academically challenging environment. Having positive relationships with my students means a lot to me and supports the student as a whole. Project-based learning, interactive notebooks, charting my journey/data talks, hands-on, and inquiry-based learning, and lessons that support the Next Generation Science and STEM Standards. Outlining clear, obtainable goals encourages my students to succeed in all assignments and assessments. Differentiated instruction, constructive feedback, and fostering a growth mindset are the trifecta for supporting student success in my classroom.
4. What is one of your proudest moments as a teacher?
I was at a pivotal moment in my career when I was given the opportunity to be the Science Department chair. It marked the end of a rough era (professionally and personally) and signified a positive incline toward transitioning into the woman and educator I dreamed of being. So, besides being voted Teacher of the Year, being offered a leadership position as the head of Jonesboro’s Science Department was one of my proudest moments.
5. What advice would you give to a new teacher just starting out?
Always remember to give yourself grace, constantly adapt, and reflect. Being an effective teacher is about seeing results and having the infinite desire to grow and improve. No matter your success level, you must always keep your passion ignited. This is fostered through student achievement and the enhancement of your pedagogy.
6. What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I love being a mommy! My son is very energetic, so he keeps me busy, but in my spare time, I am getting back into mastering calligraphy and going to the gym. I also have a newfound passion for fantasy shows/movies and docuseries.
